I had the honor in 2009 to be a judge for the finals of the Michigan Popstar competition along with David Currie (vocal coach/American Idol and Miley Cyrus) and Randy Lynch (producer/Celine Dion and Toni Braxton).  Here we are after the competition with the winner... From left to right: Randy Lynch, Marshall Block, the winner Rachel Kahn, David Currie, and myself.

Maria Rose is a Berklee Music School alumnus and singer that is the 2008 Michigan Pop Star winner.  She received a recording contract with her win and I am honored to have written and produced a song for her debut. Here is the link to her music: www.myspace.com/mariarosemusic.

Fall of 2007 and into early 2008 found me working with a Nashville/Richmond based project called Glitterboot.  This is the brainchild of friend and fellow singer/songwriter Gray Gurkin.  You can hear a sample of what Glitterboot is all about at myspace.com/glitterbootmusic .

Summer and fall of 2007 found me performing with The Kristin Ford Band in support of her fourth recording "Torn".  Kristin is a brilliant singer and songwriter who writes very smart modern pop and rock music. You can find out more about Kristin and hear some of her music at www.kristinford.net or through www.myspace.com/kristinsounds

The first single "It's In The Little Things" is a verified top 40's hit in the New Music Weekly Main Country Charts and we won the award as Country Breakthrough Artist Of The Year for 2006 at the New Music Awards in Los Angeles.  We are honored to be the only independent and unsigned artist to receive such an honor.  Congrats to all involved!

I played guitar on "Voyage To India" which was India.Arie's second recording for Motown Records. It is a multi-platinum award winning CD and won two Grammy Awards in 2003 including Best R&B Recording.

India.Arie's Motown Records debut recording received Seven Grammy nominations. It is also a multi-platinum award winning recording. This project was over a year and a half in the making. India lived at my home in Nashville for a lot of the making of this project and was an intensive period of songwriting and development for everyone involved.  Most of the work was done at Blue Millers Studio and much credit should go to Universal A&R scout Reen Nalli for getting this project the success it has received.

Blue October is a unique alt rock band out of Texas that must be seen. I worked for them as a consultant and helped them with staging and equipment endorsements for their Universal Debut.

Growing up with Motown Music in Michigan and having lived and played all over the world I never thought I would be performing Motown Music in the south.  From 2001 through 2007 I performed with the East Coasts Premier Soul/R&B Group Soul Providers.

Here's the Soul Provider independent release cover that can be heard and downloaded for free from the Soul Provider website.

The Brent Baxter Barrett Group is an outlet for my original Jazz compositions.  Imagine my surprise when we were booked as headliners for a headbangers ball called the Freak Show.  We were so "out there" doing the instrumental thing that we were "In" and everyone loved it.

I had the pleasure of working with Detroit Blues Legend Louis "Mr. Bo" Collins up until his untimely passing in 1995.  We recorded the CD "If Trouble Was Money" shortly before Bo died.  He never heard the final product but his wonderful presence lives on thru this music.  He is sorely missed!

I toured with Cleveland Reggae band Satta on their "Light Of The World" Tour.  We had the opportunity to open for The Meditations and The Wailers on this tour as well and had an "Irie" good time ... "No Problem, Mon" ...

While living and working with Afrozilia in Hong Kong I was asked to play with Hong Kong Pop Music and Movie Star Leslie Cheung.  The result is his "Love Fire" recording which went to number 1 in Hong Kong.  Imagine getting into a taxi in Hong Kong and hearing yourself on the radio playing a cantonese pop song ... a very weird Twilight Zone experience for me!

THE Number 1 band in Hong Kong in the mid 80's was Afrozilia.  Writing, Producing, and Performing everywhere thruout southeast Asia was what we did.  A combination of African, Brazilian, and Carribean influences all combined to an intoxicating groove is what this band did best.  I can say that after this experience nothing can ever come close to that. Seven television shows in two years, mobbed on the streets by adoring fans, concerts always sold out, and the most incredilbe international group of musicians from Jamaica, England, Hawaii, Brazil, Spain, and of course that ever so tropical state of Michigan!
